Chintan, jointly with IIT opened an MRF in January 2019 in the Delhi Campus with the goal to create a Zero Waste site by composting organic wastes and sending only those to landfills that cannot be recycled anymore. This project looked into providing composts, identifying wastes, and also dignified livelihood opportunities for waste workers.
Segregated wastes were collected from staff quarters via 8 rickshaws, hostels, and dumping grounds via a truck and a tractor collected horticultural wastes. Optimal safety and efficiency were followed in the process. With this IIT-Delhi was able to save 984 tons of unsegregated waste from going into landfills per year. It also provided a lesson for the future as backup workers, contracts with proper wages, well-budgeted composting, and safety measures are required for the proper functioning of an MRF.
