An evaluation to mark the completion of 18 years since India took its first step towards Solid Waste Management

India got its first set of Solid Waste Rules in the year 2000. After the completion of 18 years in 2018, it was time to look at how these ‘adult’ laws have fared. On this occasion, Chintan has thoroughly researched what is happening in India in the State of Waste in India report. The ‘State of Waste in India’ took a deep plunge into the data and diverse perspectives to locate the next steps.

The problem of waste is so huge and complex that often it seems insurmountable. This book, thus, was meant for readers to understand and interrogate what they see and don’t see of waste and wastage

The book is not a mere documentation of the set of problems that India’s waste sector is suffering from. A diverse set of contributors from very different walks of life—engineers, public health experts, industry professionals, social scientists, journalists, and activists helped in the writing of this book. Each brought their unique perspective and lens of not only understanding a specific problem but also ways of solving it. The eight chapters of this book deal with contemporary issues related to waste, pollution, waste management technologies, government policies, and public health. Focusing on the ground reality of India, the book also examines strategies for improvement in the waste management infrastructure for a positive and tangible way forward.
