How to assess inclusion of the Informal Sector in Solid Waste Management

As the volume of waste grows, governments are increasingly outsourcing management to private firms, causing the informal sector to slip between the cracks. We assess the extent of the inclusion of waste pickers in both present and new waste management systems using multiple-choice questions and documented evidence.

Informal sectors are getting erased and need formal acknowledgment of their roles to manage solid waste.

A numeric “inclusiveness” score is given for each service provided, determining areas with scope for improvement. Surveys measuring consumer satisfaction aid in building participatory waste management models. Ongoing monitoring encourages municipalities to be more inclusive, and transparent and provide rehabilitation to informal labourers that lose their livelihoods to privatization.
