There is an urgent need to mainstream wastepickers into the urban management

Whether it is household garbage, litter on the streets, or unsegregated waste at a landfill, the invisible helping hands that collect, sort, transport, and recycle waste are informal wastepickers. Lack of accountability among waste generators results in more mess and occupational hazards for them.

Despite providing an essential service and saving the government money, the informal sector is underpaid and not factored into the plan.

Based on primary research conducted in Uttar Pradesh, this manual provides guidelines to formalize and integrate the informal sector, secure their livelihoods, and make municipal solid waste management more efficient.
