A Participatory Solid Waste Management Policy for Delhi

Delhi produces a staggering 8000 tons of waste every day, and this is a conservative estimate. Interviews reveal that the city’s inhabitants don’t know the volume of waste produced or where it ends up. A habit of littering, apathy, and varied willingness to pay for management add to the problem.

Lack of awareness and management will soon turn the capital city into a dumping ground.

There is a lack of knowledge and infrastructure for safe disposal practices and widespread belief that reducing consumption is at odds with economic progress. Understanding public attitudes helps us make policy recommendations that address these gaps and decentralize solid waste management. After all, cleaning up our city is a community effort.
