A study among schoolchildren in Delhi NCR to understand their climate awareness

Climate change is severely impacting children worldwide, with increased food and water insecurity, disease, and extreme weather events. Nearly 1 billion children are at high risk, especially in low-income areas. Children are more vulnerable due to their physiological needs, such as consuming more food and water than adults. This heightened exposure leads to greater risks of health problems, including neurodevelopmental issues.

Climate concern is higher among middle-high-income children (98%) than low-income children (76%), with 14% of low-income students feeling they lack enough knowledge

In countries like India, children face the combined threats of climate change and poverty. However, children are also active agents of change, contributing to climate action through initiatives like Barefoot Warriors and advocacy by young environmentalists. Climate education for children can empower them to tackle these issues, supporting both their own resilience and aiding their families, especially women. Empowering youth with climate knowledge helps create a more sustainable future, especially for the most vulnerable.
