Training waste workers and households in composting to divert wet waste from landfills and abate methane emissions.

Chintan developed low cost home composters and rotating drum composters. It trains waste workers to provide composting services including via pit and vermicomposting from horticulture and food waste and helps individuals run their own home composting units. This reduces exposure to methane, a potent greenhouse gas, landfill fires, foul odour and disease carrying vectors like flies that lay eggs on wet waste if it is not composted. Chintan’s composting initiatives contribute to waste management strategies for Urban Local Bodies (ULBs) and are in sync with the vision of the Swachh Bharat Mission. Chintan’s low cost composting units have been distributed to more than 1500 residents, diverting approximately 250 tons of wet waste from landfills and open dumps.
