A Social-Emotional Learning (SEL) curriculum for vulnerable children on the brink of Adolescence to ensure mental ability and motivation to learn

We have worked extensively to fulfil our dream that no child should remain in trash. Children, who are from underprivileged background, are exposed to a harsh reality right from a tender age. Adolescence is a crucial period where they enter the path of their future. We in collaboration with the Delhi-based organization Labhya Foundation, created a comprehensive SEL curriculum for children in grades 6 to 8, mainly kids of wastepickers who are associated with Chintan’s Learning Centers. This three-month program aimed to develop three major outcomes that SEL ensures: enhanced emotional resilience, improved interpersonal relationships, and increased motivation to learn and engage.

The children learned to know their emotions and how to communicate in society.

This curriculum focused on critical areas beyond traditional school subjects and students are taught to recognize their emotions, communicate effectively, build strong relationships, and make empathetic decisions. The SEL curriculum's lesson plans are integrated with engaging activities that enable students to develop skills in critical areas apart from math and reading. The development of these skills was beneficial for their future, as it inculcated values and confidence to face the challenges of life.
